Strona bierna to sposób mówienia, w którym podmiot zdania nie wykonuje czynności, lecz ją odbiera.
Strona czynna (active voice):
The chef cooks the dinner.
(Szef kuchni gotuje obiad.)
Strona bierna (passive voice):
The dinner is cooked (by the chef).
(Obiad jest gotowany [przez szefa kuchni].)
Stronę bierną stosujemy, kiedy
- nie wiemy, kto wykonuje czynnośći
- osoba wykonująca czynność jest nieważna lub oczywista,
ważniejszy jest sam obiekt / skutek niż wykonawca.
